After his host quits, Dan Killian takes the stage in an effort to save his show. The crowd turns on him, throwing Molotov cocktails (they just had these handy?), when Ben Richards walks through the smoke and points a firearm (“Fate”) at his head.
The movie transitions into the credits, freezing Ben as the gun goes off, presumably k*lling Killian.
In some ways, Killian wins: Ben Richards is now an elite assassin killing people…not innocent people. It’s excusable given what Killian has been orchestrating.
Maybe a more satisfying ending would have been the crowd descending upon him while Ben tracks down and ultimately finds his family. That’d be my preference, but I’m guessing it wouldn’t have tested well with audiences.
