Every movie on this site gets a Horror Scale score — a number from 0 to 100 that answers the question your non-horror friends are actually asking: can I handle this?
The score is based on five things: how graphic the gore is, how hard the movie tries to scare you, how relentless the intensity is, the weight of the content warnings, and whether the movie ever lets you breathe.
One from each tier, pulled from scored movies on the site.
Five factors go into every score. Three are manual ratings I assign after watching. Two are calculated automatically from the tags I've already given the movie.
Gore is weighted heaviest because it's the fastest way to push a casual viewer out of the room. Content warnings stack fast — two heavy tags like SA and torture already put 12 points on the board before anything else counts.
If the formula doesn't feel right for a particular movie, I override it. The math is a starting point. I watched the movie. I know.
