The bitches are back!
Not only do I (mostly) hate movie versions of books, but I loathe remakes and sequels. Especially when they butcher movies I grew up loving.
And I grew up LOVING Hocus Pocus. I was prime age when it came out. I watched it enough as a kid that I vividly remember scenes to this day. Which means it was ripe for disappointment.
I wasn’t, though. In fact, I was impressed with the way the movie honors the original without recreating it.
Besides the Sanderson Sisters, Billy Butcherson is the only other character who returns from the OG. I’m a little bummed they didn’t bring back Thora Burch, but I do appreciate the introduction to a diverse cast (let’s face it, the original is white-white). Sam Richardson is a great comedic addition, and I love Whitney Peak. I have to say – Hannah Waddingham doesn’t have much of a storyline, but I just love the energy she brings.
The best casting is the young girl who plays Young Winifred. Her performance is uncanny.
I think the movie works for those new to the franchise and those who’ve been fans since it came out. It’s an authentic sequel.
