Perhaps I should have read Collider’s article before I watched Sweetheart:

Old-school monster action meets island survival thrills[…]

First, a solo or mostly solo character & thus the mostly silence? Not my thing. I get antsy when a movie is so singular (and same in the context of space a la Booth and Speed).

Second, I somewhat care about premises making sense. In this instance, she’s more interested in someone believing it happened to her – is this a bigger social commentary on women in society?! Otherwise, get the fuck out of there!

And then I wanted the silence to continue once the other two characters showed up. The main actress, Kiersey Clemons, is heads and shoulders above; and at that point, I didn’t really give any fucks about the monster anymore. I kinda tuned out until the damn fish guy shows up!

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS THING? It’s like the monster from the Blue Lagoon mated with Old Gregg. (Old Gregg? No? OK.)

I did tune back in once the manfish showed up. But then what I was left with was questions: what is this black hole thing? Why is he guarding this island? There’s no backstory.

And then: the crescendo. FIGHT SCENE.

I was convinced that damn manfish was a human man and some plot twist would explain everything…

Oh. No. That’s just the costume. Sigh.

On the gore front: some visible gore but nothing lingering. Genuinely creepy in places.
