The devil’s in storage

A review of Cabinet of Curiosities: Lot 36

MAGA asshole won't give back a storage unit to a Latina for Republican reasons. Turns out, the unit houses a demon and his last hope happens to be the woman he discriminated against.

Overall 3/5 Scare 3/5 Intensity 2/5 Gore 2/5

The Cabinet of Curiosities series started out strong with this one. It’s a very MAGA-coded episode, with Tim Blake Nelson doing the honors. There are a few rants you listen to, from a narrative now all too familiar.

He purchases a storage unit from an auction, only there’s a woman who owns it now, willed to her by the old man. A paper error. She must beg MAGA asshole for it back, and you can guess how that goes.

Joke’s on him, though.

The second-half of this episode takes a sharp turn. The storage unit is filled with objects—almost like The Cabin in the Woods’ basement—he can sell. One table holds what looks like a valuable book, which MAGA-man takes to an appraiser. Long story short, there’s a whole secret hallway and room off this unit, leading to a rotting corpse holding back some evil force. Uh oh.

We get our satisfying ending as MAGA-man’s fate lies in the hands of an immigrant.

Loves
  • The story unfolds slowly. There are a few things you miss the first watch – a few foreshadowed events and mysteries that get solved further in.
  • Tim Blake Nelson plays the role perfectly.
  • The MAGA narrative works really well here.
  • I did not see that ending coming!
  • The possessed corpse is quite freaky, really.
Loathes
  • A lot is packed into this episode, feels like there are two distinct storylines.
  • The whole story about the book at the end seemed like an unnecessary diversion, though I’d like a whole episode on just that.
  • Do not tell me there’s a hidden passageway and a whole room back somewhere in this storage unit.

Our Verdict

Worth watching

This is a great story with a little too much going on, plot-wise. It's a shame this was only an hour-long episode; it could have used more time.
