What a fun romp!
I knew nothing about this movie going into it, so I didn’t pick up what a bloodbath it was going to be. Not the traumatic kind, but the kind you can laugh about. Forceful, abundant arterial spray. (It’s not for everyone)
The violence is pretty brutal, but there’s still a comical element to it. If you hate any form of blood, skip this one. But if you can tolerate Evil Dead style, then definitely watch it.
Great unhinged performances from Zazie Beetz, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette. I love that women over 40 kickass in horror movies (or any film, for that matter).
The plot is basically a sister trying to find her sister, but it gets way more complicated. Several twists that raise the stakes. The action starts right away and continues throughout the film. Cool camera angles, fight scenes happen in odd places. It sort of reminds me of Kung Fu movies from the ‘70s/’80s—almost slapstick—but with the modern-day humor of Satanic Panic (extreme comedic gore with celeb kills).
Overall, I enjoyed it. I think it’s a fun watch.
There’s a lot to think about – full review coming soon!
Content Warnings
If you’re a bit squeamish about horror movies, here’s what to be aware of:
- There’s a ton of blood. Most of it is pretty comical, so it’s easier to stomach, but still a lot.
- Violence: plenty of k*lls with knives, sharp objects, and a sawed-off shotgun. You see impact. It’s kinda blunt/brutal, but CGI is a bit obvious.
- The movie incorporates abuse, rape, assault: it’s not depicted (with the exception of an intruder licking the foot of a sleeping woman) and not a huge part of the plot.
- There is a suicide/self-sacrifice.
- The plot has a racial/caste element to it: Black women and other minorities are maids, white people are the elite.
- There is an animal involved: it’s super CGI. I can’t remember if we see it d*e (I’ll confirm when I rewatch), but it’s part of the Satanism. (It’s “alive” most of the time.)
