The Midnight Club: Clock Strikes Zero
I love me a good Mike Flannigan mini series. I’d watch it even knowing it sucks. And this one kinda does. But it’s worth watching before shit gets culty.
Only some of Flanigan’s mainstays appear, mostly in the oral stories these terminal kids are telling in the middle of the night. It introduces some news ones – ones I hope appear in future series. My favorite one being Anya, played by some Tik Tok star, apparently (Ruth Codd, a right British bitch!). Another delight is Heather Langencamp. I may have said “that looks like Nancy from Nightmare on Elm Street” before I realized it was…yeah. In my defense, I can’t recall seeing her outside of the Elm Street series.
The setup – introduction of the terminal teens, the mystery surrounding the land, and miracles…I could not wait for the culmination and some twist ending. Then shit got cult-ish. The twist was easy to see coming; I mean, there’s a teen redhead and an adult redhead – easy to make that connection. My brain wandered during the ending, which ends up being sad, as one might imagine.
I didn’t catch until after I watched the series that it’s based on a Christopher Pike novel. Perhaps that’s why things got a little lost.
Also, beware that the series deals with terminal diagnosis in kids. It may hit a little close to home for some of us.
