What I Watched On Vacation

The Masked Singer

One of my guilty pleasures *may* be music reality shows (The Voice is my favorite, but I lowered myself to American Idol recently). I heard about the Season 5 winner (which was pretty obvious), so I decided to start with Season 1. I mean, if you can handle Jenny McCarthy (she wasn’t terrible), Robin Thicke, and some Nicole person from…Fifth Harmony? Oh and Nick Cannon. (Ken Jeong is my favorite.) . . . it’s not a bad show.

While the episodes are pretty formulaic, I enjoy the challenge of trying to identify a voice. On the flip side, I haven’t heard of a quarter of these people.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

I’ve watched this twice already, and I’m still missing one major part of this story. I perceived this to be a possession story – there was that, yes. But I’d categorize this as more of a witchcraft movie. Was that the twist?

There are some freaky scenes, almost all at the beginning. I seem to lose interest around the midpoint where there’s a more involved story. There’s no tie-in to the Conjuring Universe, either. This one was a “meh” from me.

Spiral

It’s from “The Book of Saw,” so I should have known I would HATE this movie. I really don’t like torture porn. The first Saw was bad enough for me – and this one is very much in the same vein as its predecessors. There were several scenes I couldn’t watch.

And if you think it’s hard to picture Chris Rock in a horror movie, you’d be right. He’s a bit robotic about his dialogue (maybe he’s following in Danny Walberg’s footsteps?) – it’s hard to get a read on who he’s supposed to be. And OMG Samuel L. Jackson. IMO, you know what you’re getting when you’re watching SLJ in a movie. But this was an exaggeration of himself (maybe that’s how he was in a prior movie??). At one point he says, and I am not shitting you:

Too much cheeze, too much gore.

Those Who Wish Me Dead

It wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Bit of a disjointed story – you get stories that have no meaning with the story you’re watching. Or you’re introduced to a character who doesn’t factor in the movie later (hello, Tyler Perry). The kid is what makes this movie decent.

The Ring

It’s been SO LONG since I’ve watched this movie (totally remember it coming out). Watching it now, as an adult, it makes so much more sense. I can definitely see why it scared the shit out of people. Definitely a classic! Now I need to go watch the second one…

Jericho

This one is from the early 2000s starring Skeet Ulrich. No idea why I decided to watch this one but it’s as horrible as you’d think.

Silence of the Lambs

It’s easy to forget HOW GOOD Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster are as actors.
